To find out whether your child's picky eating is a passing stage or something more, start by answering these
questions:
1. When did your child's problems with eating start? Was it before the age of nine months?
2. Is your child underweight? To be more precise, is his or her weight below the fifth percentile on standard growth charts?
3. Did your child skip the phase of putting toys and other objects in his/her mouth?
4. Are your child's eating skills less advanced that those of other children of the same age? (Most kids eat table foods by
the first birthday and drink from a cup by 16 months.)
5. Does your child regularly gag or vomit when eating?
6. Does your child "fall apart" and throw tantrums when offered new foods?
7. Does your child reject a specific group of foods ( all having the same texture, flavor or temperature)?
If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, your child may not outgrow food refusals without some help. Talk to
your child's doctor about seeing a specialist or for a referral to a feeding clinic.
